lace0002.jpgFor centuries, fine lace has been appreciated for its delicate, intricate beauty. Since it first evolved in the late 15th century, lace has been seen as one of the finer things in life – lending a refined grace to any home. Its delicacy speaks of the painstaking attention to detail which is involved in shaping the rare beauty of this fine material.

Lace is produced on a Nottingham Lace Machine, using a form of crochet, as opposed to the weaving process from which we obtain MADRAS.

laces0006.jpgMadras Lace is a product which takes time, care and skill to produce. Using methods which have not changed in one hundred and fifty years, it takes one expert weaver a full day on the Jacquard Loom to produce just ten metres of Madras, weaving from one of over 9000 patterns. Of these patterns, some trace their delicacy and beauty to the designs of antiquity – others are created by today’s designers, who employ their creativity to complement tradition in crafting patterns of great beauty.

The lace is made either from 100% pure cotton, or a polyester/cotton mix which combines beauty with an ease of care. Our Lace makers, traditionally known as weavers, operate the massive looms of up to 40 feet wide! Sometimes as many as 20,000 threads are used in the production of our exclusive patterns.

The end result is the finest of lace – perfect for window furnishings, bedspreads, tablecloths and dress wear, ready to bring grace and elegance to any home.

lacess0007.jpgFabric Convention has stocked Nottingham and Madras laces for the past 20 years and their popularity shows no sign of waning. In fact, many customers have come back to re-furnish their windows with the same design they chose many years before and are delighted we can usually replace like with like! We have over 20 of the most popular designs available, from the simple ‘hailspot’ and classic ‘fleur de lis’ to the traditional heavier pattern or even lace panels and many of these have been used by set designers for film sets over recent years; you may even have seen it in ‘Babe’ to name but one!

All of our Nottingham and Madras lace designs are hanging in our showroom and customers are welcome to come and visual these at any time. We also have Lace Books showing photographed pictures of our laces and these are available for $40.00.
